ALABAMA WRITING PROGRAMS

The University of Alabama English Department offers an MFA track in Creative Writing. According to the U of A official site, “Candidates for the M.F.A. degree are required to spend a minimum of two semesters in residence and to complete 48 hours of graduate-level coursework, divided as follows. Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama offers a Communications program including a Bachelor’s of Arts program in both Print Journalism and Broadcast Journalism for writers looking to specialize in news-related fields. According to the Oakwood University official site, “The major in communication allows students to pursue one of two concentration tracks: communication arts or public relations.”

Huntingdon College in Montgomery Alabama offers an English program with an emphasis on Creative Writing. This is offered by the Department of Language and Literature and alternative emphasis includes Film and Theater. Huntingdon College also has a Communication Studies Department offering a major in Communications Studies and a minor in Media Studies. Contact Huntingdon College at:

Alabama A&M University features the Department of English, Foreign Languages & Telecommunications, but writers probably know them best for the Alabama A&M University Writing Project, one of 195 national sites dedicated to the improvement of writing as a means of learning across all disciplines, from K-16 levels. Women Writing For (a) Change is the Alabama chapter of the Ohio-based national writing program for women, facilitated in Birmingham, Alabama by Lucy Jaffe. This program offers day and nighttime classes for women, “seeking to deepen their voices as writers and connect to a diverse community of other writing women,” according to the Alabama site.
