Using Meta-Tags

When I was getting my own website up and running, I wanted to make sure that I would rank well in an online search. Using meta-tags is one of the smart strategies you can employ to make sure that you get noticed. Basically, meta-tags are words that are inserted into the code of your web page that help to increase visibility. Many writers don’t bother with this step, but I would argue that it is a very important one if you want to be found.

If you don’t know much about meta-tags, your web designer should be able to take care of this for you. You shouldn’t pay for them to come up with your tags; you can do that yourself. Think about words that describe you and your site.  For example, your name, your services and your specialties. I think for mine I used words such as “freelance,” and “writer,” along with some of my bigger publishing credits. If you’d like to learn more about meta-tags, take a peek here for a decent primer. Ginny Stibolt runs through the basics so you can get an idea of how to come up with the right ones for your site. Take the time. Do it right.
