Freelance Writing Jobs

get freelance jobsToday’s sweet collection of freelance writing jobs is brought to you by the letter “N”. As in, “NOT found on freelance job sites that rely on scrapers.” These freelance writing jobs are all hand-picked and hot off the presses, all active at press time and needing YOU.

There’s nothing wrong with freelance job sites that utilize scrapers–we’ve relied on them ourselves in the past (the sites, not the scrapers).

But we wanted to give you something a little extra–other sites have the Craigslist.com, Demand Studios, and HubPages job ads down pat, so why should we reinvent what they already do so well? Here’s the latest and please don’t hesitate to share your own leads with us in the comments section–that goes for you editors, too! Spread the word if you have freelance jobs to share.

The Great Experiment

freelance jobs

by Joe Wallace

The world of freelance blogs is completely saturated with jobs and market listings. But recent developments at Freelance Writing Gigs proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that in spite of the overwhelming amount of job and market info out there, the demand for news about writing jobs and freelance markets is huge.

There was a tempest in a teapot over at Freelance Writing Gigs over Deb Ng’s post on The Freelance Writing Jobs Network titled 50 Places That Hire Freelance Writers. Someone posted a needlessly bitter comment about Deb’s post and a flurry of replies later, it’s clear people want more, more, more market and job info–even with all the sites out there hurling job data and contact info day to day.

At Freelance-Zone.com, we like a challenge. And so we join the fray. Watch this space for information on freelance gigs, markets and much more. We’ll be looking for strong, relevant writing gigs and market information. Not all of the posts will be freelance gigs–some are permanent writing positions, some are contract, some might start off being contract/temporary with the potential to go full time.

One thing I can promise you right now–our information will be much different. We DO NOT use RSS feeds or site scrapers to dig up our job information. Freelance-Zone will present HAND-PICKED JOBS and freelance writing gigs.

In our view it is far too easy to offer up a daily list of Craigslist posts and leave it at that. Will the OCCASIONAL Craigslist freelance writing job make it into these pages? MAYBE. But only if it meets my strict criteria for a quality freelance writing job or project. By and large, there will be no Craigslist ads here. Everybody else is already running them.

Besides, I have my own sources and contacts. Keep watching this space, friends.

What California’s Proposed Marijuana Tax Means To Freelancers

marijuana

by Joe Wallace

You think I’ve lost my mind now, right? What in the WORLD does POT have to do with freelance writing? Besides the obvious, I mean.

Whether you agree with marijuana use or not, take a long look at California’s new marijuana tax legislation–proposed by San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, but not yet passed. Can you find a freelance writing or freelance jobs tie-in here? Think hard.

California is sinking under its own weight. It can’t pay its bills, is issuing IOUs to state contractors and is desperately looking for any way to cut spending. The state is in grave danger from a financial perspective. But here is a cash crop grown in the state–legally or not. If California were to legalize the cultivation, sale, and posession of pot, it could raise more than a billion in tax money from it. It’s a solution that’s right under the noses of everyone in the state, pun intended.

Taxing the sale of a plant that’s in and of itself no more harmful than tobacco makes perfect sense, whatever your feelings about getting high. But what has all this got to do with freelance jobs and growing (hah) your career as a freelance writer?

Anatomy of a Craigslist Freelance Writing Job Scam

I’ve debated the merits of using Craigslist to find freelance writing gigs, but for those of you who still use CL, it’s important to avoid wasting time on the sort of idiotic scams that pop up on CL with annoying regularity. I myself fell prey to a few of these in my less informed days, so I pass along the benefit of my experiences on to you.

The following is reprinted verbatim from a recent post to the Writing Jobs section of Craigslist:

“A media blog is seeking review writers. You will be reviewing hot products of the new age and writing 500-700 word articles on them. For the application, we will require sample reviews to be written. We have 4 openings. If you are selected as a writer, work will be part-time and 20-25 jobs per week. Will be paying $100/article. Please send your request for more information (no resumes, please) to our email. Thank you.”

Now let’s dissect this ad and see why you should avoid posts like these at all costs.

1. Nomenclature written by the cluelesss. The ad is for a “media blog”. It then goes on to say that you are expected to review ‘hot products’. We’re already off to a bad start here as a media blog would, by implication, be reviewing media. Sure, it’s possible they want you to review downloads, DVDs, or other media, but in my experience, “media blogs” are commenting on either the media itself or streaming content as opposed to disc-based material. Another warning sign here is the phrase “of the new age”. What the writer MEANS to say is “hot new products of the Internet age” or some other such nonsense. As New Age pertains to a religious movement rather than technology, my bullshit detector on this tells me that the writer is a barely-literate scam artist who is throwing around terms they don’t really understand. Again, I could be TOTALLY WRONG. But we know I’m not, don’t we?

2. Confused (and confusing) expectations. The ad starts out saying they are a blog. Then the ad states that 500-700 word articles are needed. Is this a blog or a magazine? If the “blog” is paying $100 per post, the people running this are either on the scam or are the most clueless blog owners on the planet. No blog pays $100 for a blog entry. The ad says they want to fire FOUR PEOPLE at around $2500 a month each. What kind of new blog has this type of budget? Why, a non-existent one, of course! They want to shell out $10 K a month just for writers? Are you laughing yet?

3. They want you to work for free. ” For the application, we will require sample reviews to be written”. Continue reading Anatomy of a Craigslist Freelance Writing Job Scam
