According to MIT’s Global Education & Career Development Center, the term “curriculum vitae” comes from the Latin Curriculum (course) and Vitae (life). It means, “the course of one’s life”.
If you write long enough you may at some point be asked to submit a Curriculum Vitae, or CV. If you are looking at positions in academia, a CV will probably be required. This is not a resume. The idea behind a resume is to get the prudent information out front and center, while the CV is to provide more depth and detail. If you are looking for information on how to format one, what goes in it and what the primary differences are, here are some places to begin:
- Quintessential Careers has a good primer on preparing a CV.
- Colorado College has a nice, simple overview of the CV.
- Dartmouth offers information on the CV, along with supplementary materials you may also be asked to send with it.
