A Cap On Bandwith?

Let me just say right out of the box that I am totally against setting any limits on e-mail or bandwidth. As a writer, I use my computer all the time, and anything that remotely looks as though it will cost me money in the long run makes me very nervous. That said, the buzz is on about bandwidth–and I don’t like it. Comapnies such as Comcast have already introduced caps on bandwidth–although at this point they are not prohibitive for most users. The problem? Things have a tendency to slowly work their way into a costly issue if we don’t put our foot down about it early.

What does this mean for writers? Well, it can mean that down the line we might have to pay for more bandwidth. If you send large photo files in with your articles or research using video content, this can wind up being a real problem if the caps continue to get lower. Eventually things can work their way into a tiered system where you will have to pay for anything other than minimal use. This is not good news for people who use their computers as much as we do.

My advice? Put your research skills to use and find out what your internet service provider has in store–and if you don’t like it–complain! Let’s not go gently into that good night…this economy is bad enough without having to worry about paying more for the internet!
