Need A Little Company?

images.jpg

This beautiful fish is one of the best things you can get for your desk. Bettas are amazing, wonderful company. You can get them at any local pet store, and they are fairly low-maintenance.

Bettas have a special organ that enables them to breathe air, so you don’t need to set up a fancy filter system or have a gigantic tank. (The big key here is to remember never get more than one for a tank. They will fight and kill one another. And yes, I’m serious.)

There is a bit to know about their care, but the joy they can bring is worth the trouble. They are also great for encouraging you to look away from the computer screen periodically and rest your eyes.

  1. Thing to remember about Bettas:

They actually need more than the tiny jars/cups many people place them in. Do not listen to pet stores that tell you a Betta is happy in such a small area. Each one needs at least a gallon of water to be healthy. I raised them for quite some time and the Bettas I kept in larger bowls/tanks did much better than the ones I began with in small containers.

  2. Excellent tip Julie F–thanks! I have also heard that the “plant-betta combos” where the bettas are in the water with the roots of the plant aren’t the best choice either….and I agree that a gallon minimum keeps them in much better shape–they actually love to swim around!

    Foop–can I borrow your betta? : )
