From time to time I’ll feature a bookstore here that is deemed “worthy” of making the trip if you are in the area. Centuries & Sleuths is such a place…

History, biography or mystery? If one of these topics gets you excited, then so will Centuries and Sleuths Bookstore. Located just outside Chicago in the suburb of Forest Park, Illinois it is an easy side-trip for those sightseeing in the area and a good place to browse with plenty of choices.

This independent store has been open for a total of fifteen years and owner Augie Aleksy says it is a dream come true. Centuries and Sleuths has been met with great support from area mystery and history fans. Augie says, “Some customers are so loyal to the place they will go to the big bookstores, find a title they want . . . then come back here and order it!”

It’s easy to see why patrons love the store so much. Walking in, you are immediately enveloped into the cozy atmosphere. Large oak bookcases and handsome Bruce plaid carpet give the feeling of being in someone’s private library. You can tell that a lot of thought went into the feel and layout of the place.

For those looking to get a recommendation for a good read, try “The Daughter of Time” by Josephine Tey. Augie says that it is a good example of the connection between history and mystery, and often suggests this book to customers. He also likes to support local writers and carries many of their books in his store—naturally featuring those with a historical slant.

If you are in the mood for something social, check out one of the discussion groups for both mystery and history, a time set aside to come together with others and talk about favorite books. Signings are also a regular feature here, with a monthly calendar listing author appearances, dates and times—a terrific way for writers in similar genres to network—or merely meet an author they admire.

Centuries and Sleuths gets visits from authors across the nation, as well as those from other countries. You can pretty much guarantee that there is always someone interesting coming through town. Some of the most famous visitors over the years have included Sir Peter Ustinov and Steve Allen.

The store also is the home-base for a group of volunteers who do a “Meeting of Minds” series. Participants put on the persona (and usually costumes) of historical figures, and skits are often written by local discussion group members. One event was set in a castle in Scotland, another in a radio station. The series is quite imaginative and sometimes gets acting and writing professionals involved.

To get a little taste of this store and view upcoming events, take a look at the website. Those who are true buffs can sign up for the mailing list. Here you will also find information on local bestsellers, authors and the scoop on the latest new arrivals. Even if you aren’t going to be in the area, if history and mystery are your thing–check out Centuries and Sleuths. You’ll be glad you did!
